DT 55-200mm f4-5.6 Zoom Lens

Compact Design, All-Around Versatility

This high-value 55-200mm zoom lens covers a wide range of medium to long-distance telephoto applications -- and its lightweight design lets you leave it on-camera or carry it easily as an accessory lens for special purposes (35mm equivalent: 82.5-300mm).

In-Camera Image Stabilization

A major reason for its compact, lightweight design is the benefit of Super SteadyShot® in-camera image stabilization, built into every Sony & 945 system DSLR -- and enabling accessory lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms.

Advisory when using DT lenses with full-frame (35mm equivalent) DSLR cameras.

Sony α (alpha) lenses with the Digital Technology (DT) designation are ideal for use on APS-C size DSLR cameras and are not recommended for use with full frame DSLR camera bodies (such as the DSLR-A900). Although DT lenses can be used with full frame cameras, they can only realize a maximum of 11MP image size (when using the DSLR-A900), and are not guaranteed to provide accurate Auto Exposure performance.

DT Lens Design

The SAL-DT55200 is specially designed for the APS-size CCD imager used in Sony & 945 (alpha) DSLR cameras. APS-size sensors are smaller than a 35mm-format film frame, so the focal distance to cover the same field of view can be about 2/3 shorter -- allowing a more compact lens design.

Multi-Element Design

The SAL-DT55200 is designed with 13 lens elements in 9 groups, with precision focusing performance and smooth zoom operation.

Short Minimum Focusing Distance

With the ability to focus as closely as 3 feet (.95m), this telephoto lens also lets you move in for dramatic shots of people, natural subjects and close-up details.

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass

Because light of different wavelength (or color) bends at different angles when it passes through a lens, ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass is used to eliminate chromatic aberration by correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors.

85mm F/2.8 SAM SONY LENS

This is the first full-frame lens in the ‘Easy Choice’ range, so its launch represents an important development of the line-up as a whole. The 85mm focal length is a standard for portraiture because of the natural perspective that it provides. On an APS-C sensor camera the 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) functions as a 127.5mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto lens – and features a Sonnar-type optical design that is considered ideal for mid-range telephoto lenses.
The lens is sharp center to corner, and features smooth defocusing thanks to its large F2.8 maximum aperture and circular aperture design. At 0.6 metres, the minimum focusing distance is the shortest in its class, and SAM motor technology ensures smooth autofocus operation.
The quality optical and mechanical features of the lens mean it is suitable for serious photography and should more than satisfy intermediate to advanced users.

50mm f/1.8 Sony Lens

Make the move from the standard zoom and explore the world of portrait photography with the SAL-50F18 lens for your α DSLR camera. It boasts a large aperture which makes it easy to get great-looking portrait shots. The SAL50F18 is one of the first fixed focal length lenses in the DT series, which is designed exclusively for α DSLRs that use an APS-C type sensor. Please note: DT lenses are not recommended for use with the DSLR-A900.

SteadyShot INSIDE™ In-Camera Image Stabilization

A major reason for its compact, lightweight lens design is the benefit of SteadyShot INSIDE™ in-camera image stabilization, built into every® α (alpha) DSLR camera -- and enabling lenses to eliminate the extra weight and expense of in-lens stabilization mechanisms.

DT Lens Design

A more compact, lightweight lens designed specifically for the APS-size CCD imager used in some Sony® α (alpha) DSLR cameras.

Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)

The built-in Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) eliminates the need to use a mechanical coupling system in the camera body to transfer auto foucs (AF) drive power and control signals to the lens. Instead, AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the focusing lens group directly, helping to assure smooth AF response.

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) Glass

To reduce chromatic aberration at telephoto extension, correcting certain wavelengths of light for sharp, clear images with well defined colors.

Superb Sharpness in Available Light
In conjunction with the Super SteadyShot® image stabilization system of the Sony ± (alpha) DSLR-A100 camera, this lens achieve pinpoint sharpness even working with hand-held camera by available light.
Bright f1.4 Aperture
The ability to capture more light in dark environments gives you a superb lens for hand-held shooting without flash, to preserve the mood or in locations where flash is not permitted.
Circular Aperture
Conventional lenses close their apertures with blades that can create multi-sided shapes -- but the aperture blades of this superb wide-angle lens form a near circle at the wide openings you’ll use for low-light shots, so spot-light sources have a pleasing circular defocused effect.

35mm f/1.8 Sony Lens

Sony has released three prime lenses for its Alpha SLR system. First up is the eagerly-awaited Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM, which we saw in prototype form at PMA. Designed as a fast wideangle for full frame, it also offers a classic 35mm-equivalent field of view on APS-C. Second we have the DT 35mm F1.8 SAM, a fast normal lens for APS-C. Finally this is joined in Sony`s newly-christened `Easy Choice` range of inexpensive primes by the 85mm F2.8 SAM, a compact `portrait` telephoto that works on both APS-C and full frame cameras. All of these lenses can also be used on the NEX mirrorless cameras via the LA-EA1 adapter, although in manual focus mode only. The 24mm and 85mm lenses will start shipping from late September at retail prices of €1,250 and €250 respectively, followed by the 35mm which will be available from mid-October at a retail price of €200. With regards to the US price and availability of the three lenses, the company says, “Announcement for US market is not being made at this time, but will be made closer to the products’ market introduction.”

35mm f/1.4G Sony Wide-Angle Lens

The Sony 35mm f/1.4G is one of those lenses that survived from the old Minolta era. The original design dates back to 1987 - the early days of the Minolta AF SLR system. The current incarnation is basically identical to the Minolta AF 35mm f/1.4G RS except for ADI support and cosmetic changes to match the current Sony Alpha look. The lens is a member of the professional-grade Sony G ("Gold") lens lineup with a correspondingly high price tag around 1300US$/€. The primary feature of the lens is, obviously, the ultra-large max. aperture (f/1.4) which provides a very shallow depth-of-field (in close- to mid-focus scenarios).

Regarding its history it is obviously a full-format wide-angle lens but it is naturally compatible to the current gang of Sony APS-C DSLRs. Within this scope the field-of-view is equivalent to about 53mm in classic terms so it behaves like standard lens rather than a moderate wide-angle lens.

The build quality of the lens is excellent thanks to a metal body and very tight tolerances. Compared to e.g. the Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 USM L it is a quite small lens. The all-rubber focus ring located at the very front of the lens operates very smooth. The focus ring is decoupled from the AF system so it does not rotate during AF operations - same goes for the filter mount. The physical size of the lens remains constant regardless of the focus distances.

Typical for legacy Sony lenses the 35mm f/1.4 does still rely on the classic focusing system driven by the camera (via a slotted drive screw). Consequently the AF produces a moderate degree of noise during operations but thanks to the rear-focus system the AF is pretty fast. The lens features a floating system for improved close-focus performance.
